The official name of the country that we know of as Spain is Reino de España, or the Kingdom of Spain, and also has a constitutional monarchy as its form of government. The capital of the country is Madrid. Madrid is the highest situated capital in Europe.
The country is located on the Iberian Peninsula in the southwest of Europe and is roughly 12 times the size of the Netherlands, with a surface area of more than 505,000 square metres.
Spain is surrounded on her borders by Andorra, France, Portugal and Gibraltar. The borders of Spain can be described as natural because these are mostly formed by mountains, rivers and coastline. The breadth of the coastline is almost 5,000 kilometres.
Furthermore, the thirteen Canary Islands, among which are Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Tenerife, are also part of the Spanish Kingdom.
