Mirtos is a small authentic Greek village with approximately 400 inhabitants. It is situated directly at the seafront, with beach and a small boulevard. The village is lively in winter as well, unlike most touristic villages on Crete which are almost deserted. The village has two small supermarkets, a butcher and a baker, and also in winter you will find a few restaurants and a bar which are open.

The area (within 20 kms)

Mirtos and its surroundings offer beautiful nature to hikers, with views over the mountains and the sea. Recently a lot of work has been done to create off trails which give you an impression of the magnificent nature and various villages in the neighbourhood.

Around Mirtos you will find approximately ten authentic villages which are very interesting to visit. Here you may mix in with the very hospitable inhabitants, or have a glass of wine in the local “kafenion”, if available.

Tertsa (5 kms)

When driving/walking eastwards from Mirtos along the road next to the coast, you will reach Tertsa after 5 kms. In this little seaside village you may have a meal or a drink, or have a lie on the beach.

Kalami (15 kms)

Kalami is a deserted, but beautiful mountain village which gives the impression that people left all of a sudden. A very impressive sight.

Ierapetra (15 kms)

Because of the many glasshouses in the area, Ierapetra has developed into a quite modern town. This can be seen by the type and number of shops and its nightlife. It also has a weekly market which offers fruit, vegetables, clothes, etc.

East Crete

Kalamafka, Prina (25 kms)

These typical Greek villages in the outback are well worth visiting. Close to these villages you will find a viewpoint from which you can see the sea at the north- as well as at the southside of Crete.

Agios Nikolaos, Elounta and Spinalonga (45-55 kms) the

In the seaside village of Agios Nikolaos you will find, according to the legend, the bottomless lake of Voulismeni. Around the lake you will find various lively terraces. Elounta is well known by the tv-series “Who pays the ferryman” and is a friendly, lively seaside resort. From both villages you can travel to the island of Spinalonga, which held a leper colony where people lived under apalling conditions.

Lassithi Plateau (90 kms)

This plateau is especially known by its former 10.000 windmills. Despite the fact that many of these are dilapidated, the view is magnificent. On the plateau you will also find the Dikteon.
