The house was the former residence of the cork manufacturer and is attached to the former cork factory, which is now the residence of the (French and Dutch speaking) owner. About myself:

Although my name, Mary Grahame, sounds English, I was born and raised in Sluis, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, The Netherlands.

I have been living in France since over 40 years now. Since 2001 we have been living in the beautiful town of Mézin – we have been looking purposely just below Bordeaux and above Toulouse, thus having the best chance to live in a pleasant climate without extremes. The friendly locals as well as the availabilithy of some shops made us decide on this place, and of course the house and the garden. This area is also called the French Tuscany. I am bilingual and very well established in the area, therefore being able to provide you with good tips to enjoy your holiday to the full. In your holiday home you will find documentation regarding the Lot-et-Garonne and the neighbouring Gers, so you do not have to depend on me totally.

I lived in ‘la maison du bouchonnier’ (the house of the corkmaker) with my husband, but when I became a widow I started to live in the former cork factory next to the holiday home.

Free internet, protected with code, through the router in the gîte and internet telephone with which you can make free calls to Dutch fixed phone numbers.

A television is provided, with French channels only. I do not have Dutch television since my guests watch tv through tablet or notebook. I do so myself too. There is a large collection of multilingual DVDs and you will find Dutch and French books on the shelves. Mézin has a (French) library.

The stone house, which is naturally cool in summer, is situated in a quiet street in the center of the real French, attractive medieval town of Mézin, 1.500 inhabitants, swimming pool, bakery, butchers, grocery, superette, pharmacy, tabac (Dutch newspapers on demand) and cafés and restaurants are at 150 metres from the house.

The scenery is varied, nicely sloping and the area proves a rich history. The Lot-et-Garonne is situated south of the Dordogne and Mézin lies next to the department Gers and also to the woods of Les Landes.

The holiday home is equipped for 6 guests; it has 3 bedrooms on the first floor, one with a double bed and one with two single beds (twin beds, trundle). Both rooms are 12 square meters. The third bedroom is 25 square metres and has a double slatted bed which is electrically adjustable. Extra childrens bed or cot is available on demand. Off season I usually have two guests in the house.

House, garden and privacy

A large terrace, partially covered, situated at the same level as the house and perfectly suited to enjoy your summer meals.

Overwintering is well possible here. Most of the time the heating is switched on on November 1, because the late summer is a very comfortable season. Depending on the weather and temperature, the heating is switched off on May 15. A sensor on the outer wall controls this.

Interior of the house:

The terrace of 88 sq mtrs, partially covered, and the garden belong to the holiday home, on 640 sq mtrs in total.

My guests are always amazed about the quietness in the garden, even in case of events in town. The only noise makers are the birds or the bees on a hot summer day.

The heated public pool with sunbathing area is only 150 metres away. It is open from June till September – in July and August from 14.00 till 20.00, except Mondays. Entrance: children € 1,-, from 16 years on € 2,-.

The local bakeries are close by, so enjoy the real French feeling every morning with fresh French bread, croissants and fresh orange juice.

Restaurants at moderate prices are found in the entire region. There are 2 restaurants in Mézin within walking distance from the house. Enjoy your dinner at lunchtime in France, with very interestingly priced menus. Try to arrive before 13.00! and in the evenings after 19.30.

In summer evening markets and dinner parties are organized. Each village in the area has its own special day – in Mézin this is the Monday evening. The Sunday morning market is a very pleasant market with fresh fruit and vegetables, wonderful cheeses and roast chicken, and ready meals on the market as well as in the local delicatessen store which is open daily.

On Thursday a market is held under the arcades, vegetables, preserves of national products and a fish stall.

Mézin is situated in a real cycling, fishing and hiking paradise, printed descriptions of circuits are available for you. There are over 400 circuits. In the house you will find extensive documentation on what to do in Mézin and surroundings, but also for daytrips to the beach or the Pyrenees. Cycling or hiking through “La voie verte” – the circuits have been printed already for you, I have walked them myself, or to be found on the internet.  The region has a rich cultural and historical past. The nearest  18-hole colf course is at 15 kms distance, in Barbaste. Entrance fee € 34,- for splendid and relaxed golfing. There is much to see and do in and around Mézin , which is situated on the border of the Gers de Pays d’Albret, which is the name of this small part of France. The river Baïse skirts along this part. The nearest Bastide is Fources, 6 km away, Nérac at 12 kms, Condom 15 kms. There are many beautiful bastides, villages and spots to visit. You will find a lot of documentation in the house, and I live nextdoor to you in the former factory, so if you do have any questions, do not hesitate to drop by.

In 2016 Mézin started to organize evening markets in summer on Mondays. This has proved to be very succesful. We also celebrate ‘la fête de la musique’ on June 21st. The feast days of Mézin are celebrated on June 24, 25 and 26, depending on how the weekend is fit in. On August 15th the fête des commercants is celebrated, with grillades and frites being served outside. In April the Tour du Lot-et-Garonne is held – it usually finishes in Mézin, which is an opportunity for a party yet again. The slogan of Mézin therefore is:  le pays du bien vivre, meaning the country of the good life. Mézin has a Cave Cooperative for wine and Armagnac from the small wineries around Mézin. There are also beautiful independant wineries including in general a tasting room. I have a folder in which they are all mentioned and with a description of their situation. At the end of the summer one Sunday children are allowed to press  grapes the original way, so with bare feet in a tub, great fun, and tasting the grapejuice afterwards! This is the start of the vintage of the Cooperative.

In November in various places ‘la flamme de l’Armagnac’ is celebrated. This means the Armagnac is going  to be distilled. During this period a special hike is organized which attracts many national and international hikers. The start is at Laroque sur l’Osse, close to Heux en Fources, around 15 kms from Mézin. The lunchbreak is held on a winery where everybody has brought his own picknick and the wine grower treats you to his wine. Also during the winter months there are activities and expositions, and towns like Agen, Auch etc. have a museum. Mézin has a cork museum: Musée du liege et du bouchon. Guests of maison du bouchonnier  will find it an interesting visit which enables them to see how things worked at the former bouchonnier.

There will always be something to do in the area, but just relaxing in the house and garden is a pleasant activity as well.
