Population

In 2009 Portugal had a population of 10,707,924 residents, and the population density is low. Most Portuguese live in the coastal area between Lisbon and Spain, which makes this area densely populated. More than 10% of the population live in the cities of Lisbon and Porto, while half of the population lives in small villages.
An estimated 3 million Portuguese live abroad. This is because of, among other things, the economy, but there is also a large group of Portuguese who are descended from the former colonies and have returned to the motherland.
Due to the former colonies, Portugal is home to a variety of nationalities. Because of decolonisation many immigrants from the former colonies have moved to Portugal. Indeed, immigration has increased even more since the entry of Portugal into the European Union. A very large number of immigrants come from other Portuguese speaking countries that are dominated by a similar religion and culture. As a result Portugal has not had many problems with immigration.
There is also a group of immigrants that come from other European countries who spend their winter holiday in Portugal or live their permanently.
