Language

The language spoken in Portugal is Portuguese, a language closely related to Spanish but which has assumed a character of its own. Since the 15th century AD Portuguese has gone through its own developments, separate from Spanish, making the language sound more melodious than Spanish these days.
Portuguese is the only official language in Portugal, although Mirandese is spoken in the Miranda do Douro region. This language is acknowledged as a minority language. Portuguese is spoken by around 160 million people around the world. This naturally has to do with Portugal's period of colonisation. A prominent detail is that the largest group of Portuguese-speaking people are the Brazilians.
Because Portugal is heavily dependant on tourism for its revenue, you will be able to speak English with most inhabitants during your winter vacation.
